Background of the Study
Migration, particularly the return of youth to their communities, often brings complex challenges related to identity and integration. In Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State, youth returnees frequently face identity crises stemming from the clash between urban experiences and traditional cultural expectations (Ekwueme, 2023). Many returnees experience disorientation as they navigate the transition between the cosmopolitan values acquired abroad and the indigenous norms of their home communities (Obi, 2024). This phenomenon has been linked to feelings of alienation, low self-esteem, and social disconnection (Okoro, 2025). The study investigates the relationship between migration experiences and identity formation, focusing on the psychological and social dimensions of reintegration. It further examines the coping strategies employed by youth returnees and evaluates how community support systems facilitate or hinder their identity reconstruction (Chukwu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Youth returnees in Ika South face significant identity crises, yet there is limited research that explores the underlying causes and implications of these challenges. Many young individuals experience internal conflicts as they try to reconcile their urban experiences with traditional cultural expectations (Uche, 2024). The resulting identity crisis may lead to adverse mental health outcomes and social disintegration. This study aims to fill the research gap by investigating how migration influences identity formation and to identify effective support mechanisms for youth returnees (Eze, 2025).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of migration on identity formation among youth returnees.
To explore the psychological challenges associated with reintegration.
To recommend strategies for supporting identity reconstruction.
Research Questions:
How does migration affect the identity of youth returnees?
What are the primary challenges faced during reintegration?
What support mechanisms can facilitate smoother identity reconstruction?
Research Hypotheses:
Migration significantly disrupts identity formation among youth returnees.
Reintegration challenges correlate with increased psychological distress.
Community support systems mitigate identity crises.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the identity challenges faced by youth returnees, informing community leaders and policymakers on effective reintegration strategies. The findings will help design support systems that promote psychological well-being and a balanced sense of identity among returnees in Ika South (Okafor, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing migration and identity crises among youth returnees in Ika South Local Government Area, Delta State, without addressing other aspects of migration.
Definitions of Terms:
Migration: The movement of people from one region to another.
Identity Crisis: A period of uncertainty and confusion regarding personal identity.
Youth Returnees: Young individuals who have returned to their home communities after living elsewhere.
